“REPEATS,” I repeat, are necessary evil. Let me REPEAT that…
posted by John

Argh! Argh! Nearly two months since I blogged about anything? Bloody hell.

OK. Life’s been busy. VERY busy. But I’m working hard to get things back under control.

Part of “Getting things back under control” means getting ahead on Dork Tower. Which I’m doing. Which is ALSO why there was a repeat (”classic”) strip on Wednesday and why there’s a repeat strip today, and why there will be repeat strips next week.

I try to run repeats only as a second-to-last resort. The LAST resort is, of course, putting nothing up, at all. But for the last few months, work has been so busy that I’ve been drawing Dork Towers virtually the night before they get posted. And sometimes writing them, then, as well. This is not a smart way of working.

So I’ve been building this backlog. And these repeats help, as well. Indeed, this is a nice series to repeat, as:

(a) I figure five-year-old strips are probably “new” to quite a few readers here, and…

(b) Sonia is a character I’ve wanted to reintroduce for a while now. So before I do any new strips with Sonia, running the old ones should bring everybody up to speed. And…

(c) It’s fascinating to me, seeing just how much my style has changed in five years.

There’s lots of new stuff happening in life, and big changes in how I approach my work, be it on the games, in the comics, or on other fronts. And there are several other fronts happening, right now. Good fronts.

Yet the other day, while working on this organizational front, I realized that come January 2012, Dork Tower will be fifteen years old.

FIFTEEN!

In other words, my little web strip will be old enough to start sneaking cigarettes, and Dad’s vodka.

How did that happen? I’m not entirely sure. But there are a few things going on that will (with luck) be completed long before the 15th anniversary of Dork Tower.

The most important one being, a renewed commitment from me, to the strip. Getting ahead of the game, working up new story lines, and tying up old plot threads. Once the comic books start coming out again, the timeline between what happens in the strip and what happens in the comic books should also tie together more consistently.

Another important change is a total redesign of the Dork Tower.com, Kovalic.com and Dr. Blink.com sites. A very, very past due redesign. Complete with ARCHIVES THAT DON’T SUCK. You know, ones that are fully indexed and tagged, with older material being as searchable as the new stuff. With dates that are consistent. With organization that makes sense. WITH BUTTONS THAT WORK.

So, yes…changes are coming. I’ll go into specifics soon. Probably next week. And I’ll introduce some of the folks who are helping to make the changes become a reality. It’ll be hard work, but hard work towards a goal you believe in is fun.

And I’m having fun. Exhausted, sleepless fun. Nervous fun. Uncertain, self-doubt-riddled fun. But fun, nevertheless. I’m excited.

ANYHOO, this was meant to be just a short note, to be expanded upon later. Next week, say. Once I get my act back in gear and keep everyone updated a bit (read: “a LOT”) better.

So, in brief: still alive. Work’s grand. Need to organize. Busy. Deadlines. Treading water. Yadda, yadda, yadda. But – AND THIS IS RATHER IMPORTANT – I’d like YOU to be involved, if you wish. If you have any suggestions as t other ways DorkTower.com could be improved, I’d love to hear them (”Learn how to draw muskrats, dummy” possibly unhelpful. “Get rid of those full-page ads before we can get to the cartoon” very helpful. I hate those, too).

I sure hope you like some of the stuff that’s gonna be coming down the pipeline.

Muskrat out,

====== John

PS.Since there are repeats this and next week, here’s a NEW strip I did for the Madison Mallards, whose season began last week, and in whose FINE 2011 program THIS VERY CARTOON MAY BE FOUND. This one. GO MALLARDS!

I Know What You Did Last Week
posted by John

My week not at Gen Con:

* I helped my pal James win this round of the Cadburys Pocketgame competition. Well, when I say “I,” I really mean you all: the Army of Dorkness. From being down by fifty votes on Friday, the Army of Dorkness swooped in and helped Flick Racer win the thing by a comfortable margin of more than one hundred votes. Just amazing. James will be announcing a really cool “thank you” soon, and, with luck, so will I.

* By the way: “Flick Racer” looks VERY RUDE when typed in caps. Lesson learned.

* I went to see the New Pornographers with my wonderful wife and a slew of good friends, and the show turned out to be utterly EPIC. I was THIS close to Neko Case’s voice! THIS close, I tells ya!

New Pornographers

* The lovely and talented Judith and I attended a Madison Mallards “Tribute to Bacon” night at the ballpark, where Judith suggested she’d go for a Bacon Chocolate Sundae, if they had one. They didn’t. But they did have bacon (and lots of it – some even in handy caramelized bacon bit form), and they did serve chocolate sundaes. So I suggested to Mallards VP Vern Stenman that they missed an opportunity here. He agreed, called the head of food service over, and by the fifth inning the Bacon Chocolate Sundae was on the Mallards’ menu. And it was a huge hit – at times, the line was 20 deep. So popular was it that the Mallards are keeping it on their menu. So…go Team Judith and John.

Bacon Appreciation Day

* Lest you worry about me eating too many Bacon Chocolate Sundeas (De-LISH-us, btw), I’m down another couple of pounds. This makes it 16 pounds lost, mostly through eating less (shock! Horror!) and going on long walks and bike rides.

* But the MAIN thing that happened while you were at Gen Con and I wasn’t? Seeing Louisa pedal her tricycle – on her own – for the first time. I started off pushing her, and she put her feet on the pedals. I gave her a bit of a shove, and she went off. Four feet later, I realized it was no longer momentum from the push that was keeping my baby girl going, but those little legs. I was stunned, and outrageously happy. I WAS THERE TO SEE MY DAUGHTER’S FIRST BIKE RIDE. Much like last year, when I skipped Origins, and saw Louisa pull herself up for the first time, I was overcome by a wave of pure Dadda happiness.

I hear Gen Con was great, and I’m glad everyone had such a cool time. Miss you all, and I’ll be back soon.

Me, though? I was busy at home. :-)

Mallards move on to Northwoods League Championship Series with 14-5 triumph

The Mallards swept the Wisconsin Woodchucks Tuesday and Wednesday to win the Northwoods League Southern Division title. Last night’s 14-5 win over the Woodchucks was about as fun a game for me as there could be. I’m a worrying kind of fan, so give me a blowout over a close game, over a pitcher’s duel ANY day of the week.

The Mallards now move on to the Northwoods League Championship Series, against the Thunder Bay Border Cats. Game one is Friday night in Madison, games two and (if necessary) three are Saturday and Sunday in Thunder Bay, Ontario. With luck, the Mallards can keep playing the kind of ball that’s been all too absent from their game since taking the first half of the season.

But: YAY! One more Mallards game in Madison this year!

GO MALLARDS!

Thank god John Edwards never became president. Not because his inability to keep his zipper zipped could have brought down the White House, nor because of any particular policies of his, but because the United States’ editorial cartoonists seem to have a singular difficulty in coming up with even a halfway decent caricature of him.

Of course, I’m no greart caricaturist. For goodness sakes, I’m lucky when I get a line straight. Still, Edwards doesn’t seem THAT hard to pin down. But darn if anybody managed to capture him since last Friday’s quasi-scandal. This is even more surprising when you consider he’s been on the national scene for four years now, after his unsuccessful bid with Kerry in 2004.

No, it’s not been a good week for the nation’s caricaturists. And it’s still only Thursday. To wit: John Edwards or Donald Trump? YOU make the call…

This next one’s not a bad drawing. Yet apparently, John Edwards has a broken nose that I at some point missed…honestly, I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be the joke in the cartoon or not. “In Remission – John Edwards’ Career” or “In Remission – John Edwards’ nose.” YOU make the call…

Horsey does a VERY good Edwards on top…so it’s prolly OK that on his side, his Edwards seems slightly Ralph Reed/Wally-Cleaver-esque…

Now, it’s not just caricatures of Edwards that left cartoonists dazed and confused these last couple of days. Other top politicos also seem to have given some of my friends and colleagues fits. And again, these are national and intternational politicians who’ve been around for years – so what gives? For example: Putin or Wesley Clark? YOU make the call…

Some cartoonists gripe that Atlanta’s Mike Luckovich seems to be the cartoonist Newsweek runs 90% of the time. But he’s consistent, and I’ve never seen him try and pass off a half-assed caricature. Still, even he had difficulty with Edwards:

One thing’s for sure, though: if Newsweek runs a “Michgael Phelps is a Fish/Michael Phelps Beats the Fish” cartoon this week, it’ll most likely be Luckovich’s:

Happy Birthday, Aunt Linda

Today would have been the 69th birthday of my Aunt Linda.
Hit with both Down’s Syndrome and, later, Alzheimers, it would be easy to conclude that life just isn’t bloody fair, sometimes. Yet Linda Williams was one of the most wonderful human beings I have ever had the privilege [...]
