I don’t know if other cartoonists feel the same way, but often when I do a sketch I love, the finished drawing doesn’t come out nearly as nice. it’s almost as if a good sketch dooms a final drawing, for me.

This was not the case late last week.

I can’t say what the drawing is for, yet (go on…guess!), but the sketch was the fourth one I’d done, trying to nail down this character design. I really liked the look of it. And lo and behold, the finished drawing ended up looking (IMO, of course – you guys know how I seldom like my own stuff) even better!

Dreamland Toyworks recently announced the release of Mythos Buddies a new line of 3″ tall vinyl toys I designed as a follow-up to My Little Cthulhu.

There will be 12 figures overall – 9 based on the basic “Buddy Cthulhu” mold, and three unique molds. Once again, Tom Meier did me the honor of sculpting them. Every Monday for the next few weeks, Dreamland will unveil two new colorforms. Here are the designs unveiled so far:

Think of them as a Cthulhu version of the Smurfs. Evil, evil Smurfs. Cthulhu for President is one of the uniques, giving a thumbs-up…

I have been hinting that I have three huge projects in the works. This is not one of them. this is, however, a very fun medium-sized project. It’s been a blast. To say nothing of more My Little Cthulhu colorforms coming down the road…

I got some snarky e-mails about today’s cartoon being a cut-n-paste Photoshop job.

It’s not. Look closely. Every frame is individually drawn.

I wanted the frame-by-frame LOOK of cut-n-paste, for the pacing of the strip, but the honesty of hand-drawn. So I drew a “master frame,” used a light table (aka “technology from the last century”), and did each new frame individually.

Because I care. That’s why.
